About Sarah Blacker-Barrowman

Miss Ava’s Millinery was established in 2014 by Sarah Blacker-Barrowman, an archaeologist and cabaret performer turned milliner.

Using traditional skills, Sarah crafts each hat, fascinator and headpiece by hand in her Kent studio. This helps to ensure that it will be a unique item that will bring a smile and confidence whenever it’s worn.

Sarah specialises in working with clients to create bespoke headwear which is just perfect for their style and occasion. Her approach, starting with a cuppa and a chat, makes even the most unsure hat wearer feel comfortable and at ease.

She also creates ready made bridal headpieces, classic hats, statement headwear, and fascinators. These pieces have drawn inspiration from Sarah’s life long love of vintage style and fashion, and have included elements of recycled jewellery and buttons in recent work. Being a fan of fedoras and working with felt Sarah has also expand further into everyday hats for all genders.

Sarah also relishes a creative challenge, creating head-turning pieces for photoshoots and exhibitions, including an Alice in Wonderland inspired tea cup, and wearable Piranha Plant.

Based in Medway, Kent, Sarah offers consultations and visits to her riverside studio by appointment. Video calls are also available.

Sarah’s been featured in press including ‘Frankie’ and ‘The Lady’, and in exhibitions for London Hat Week and Hattember. Bespoke pieces have been commissioned for television, and worn on theatrical and cabaret stages.
